Brewing coffee at high altitudes can be challenging due to the lower atmospheric pressure, which affects the boiling point of water. At higher elevations, water boils at a lower temperature than at sea level.

This can impact the extraction of flavors from the coffee grounds and result in under-extraction if not properly addressed.


To make a good cup of coffee at high altitudes, it's essential to adjust your brewing process. Here are some tips:

  1. Use Fresh Coffee Beans: Freshly roasted coffee beans will provide better flavor and aroma, compensating for any potential issues caused by altitude.

  2. Grind Size: Finer grind sizes increase the surface area of coffee exposed to water, aiding in proper extraction. Experiment with grind settings to find the optimal one.

  3. Water Temperature: Since water boils at a lower temperature at high altitudes, you might need to heat your water slightly longer or use water just off the boil (around 195-200°F / 90-93°C) for brewing.

  4. Brew Time: Adjust the brew time to ensure enough extraction occurs. Longer brew times can help offset the lower water temperature.

  5. Coffee-to-Water Ratio: Increase the coffee-to-water ratio slightly to make a stronger brew.


High Altitude Coffee Maker Setting:


Some modern coffee makers come equipped with a high altitude setting to address the issues faced when brewing coffee at higher elevations. This setting allows the coffee maker to compensate for the lower boiling point of water by adjusting the brewing parameters such as temperature and brew time.


If your coffee maker has a high altitude setting, you can use it to make the necessary adjustments automatically. However, if your coffee maker does not have this specific setting, you can manually apply the tips mentioned above.
